While upgrading and leveling up are connected, they provide different bonuses.

 

Upgrading a Customer raises both their patience and the amount of hearts you'll earn from them. This can be done in a venues Store below the food and staion upgrades.

 

 

But in order for a Customer to upgrade, they must be at the appropriate level. So make sure they're leveled up before you try and upgrade! Leveling up can be done in the Character menu.

 

 

You can also earn rewards as you Level Up the Customers, providing you with boosts, gems, and more!
