Yes, you can choose your own nickname once you have completed the tutorial.

Tap the settings icon in the sidebar.then open the Settings screen.

   

Then tap on your temporary ID (for example "RidiculousRhinos451") at the top of the screen to open the name selection screen.   

If the name is already taken, you will be prompted to choose a different name.
